How to Get More Google Reviews as a Contractor

Short answer: Ask every customer, in person, on the day the job wraps. Then text them your direct Google review link within the hour and send one reminder a couple of days later. Make the ask part of the job checklist, not something the owner remembers on a good week. Reply to every review you get. Don't offer discounts or gift cards for reviews, because Google prohibits it and can remove them.

That's the whole system. The rest of this post is how to make it stick with a crew that's tired, busy and already on to the next job.

Why most contractors are stuck at a handful of reviews

It's rarely because customers are unhappy. Usually the job goes fine, the homeowner says "you guys were great," and everyone moves on. Nobody asked. Or somebody asked, but it was a vague "leave us a review sometime" with no link, and the customer had to search for your business, find the right listing, and figure out where the button is.

Two things kill reviews: bad timing and friction. Fix those and the numbers move.

Step 1: Ask in person, right when the job is done

The best moment is the walkthrough. The new water heater is running, the deck is stained, the customer is standing there looking at it. That's when they feel the most goodwill toward you, and it fades fast.

Keep the ask short and specific:

"Glad you're happy with it. Most of our work comes from people finding us on Google, so a quick review really helps us. I'll text you the link so you don't have to look for it."

Whoever does the walkthrough asks. For a lot of companies that's the lead tech or the foreman, not the owner. Put it on the closeout checklist right next to "clean up the site" so it happens every time.

Step 2: Send the direct link within the hour

Don't make people hunt. Google Business Profile lets you create a direct review link and a QR code from your profile. Copy the link once, save it as a text shortcut on every crew phone, and use it everywhere.

Text beats email for this. People read texts. Here's a template you can use:

Hi Dana, it's Mike from Ridgeline Roofing. Thanks again for having us out today. If you have a minute, a Google review would mean a lot to our team: [link]. Any questions about the roof, just reply here.

A few things that template does on purpose. It uses their name and yours. It names the job. It gives one link. It leaves the door open for problems, which matters because you'd rather hear about a drip in the flashing by text than in a one-star review.

Step 3: Follow up once, then stop

Plenty of people mean to leave a review and forget. One reminder two or three days later is fine. More than that starts to feel like nagging.

Hi Dana, quick follow-up from Ridgeline. If you didn't get a chance yet, here's the review link again: [link]. Thanks either way.

If they don't respond after that, let it go.

Step 4: Put the QR code where customers already look

Some customers would rather scan than tap a text. Print the QR code on:

  • Leave-behind cards in the folder with warranty paperwork

  • The final invoice, paper or PDF

  • A magnet on the water heater, panel or furnace you just installed

  • Your truck, small, near the back door

None of these replace the in-person ask. They just catch the people who meant to do it later.

Step 5: Reply to every review

Replying shows future customers that a real person runs the company. It also tells the reviewer you noticed. Keep positive replies short and specific to the job. For a negative review, stay calm, don't argue the details in public, and offer to talk directly. We wrote a full guide on handling bad Google reviews as a contractor.

This is where a lot of owners fall behind. Five reviews come in during a busy week and none get a reply for a month. A tool like MoReviews drafts replies in your voice for each new Google review, you approve or edit, and it posts. It also suggests updates to your Google Business Profile and schedules Google posts.

What you can and can't do under Google's rules

This section matters more than most guides admit.

  • Asking every customer for a review (Yes): Ask everyone, not only the ones you think loved it

  • Texting or emailing your direct review link (Yes): Google provides the link and QR code for this

  • Printing a QR code on cards and invoices (Yes): Same link, different format

  • Replying to reviews, good and bad (Yes): Encouraged

  • Offering a discount, gift card or entry into a drawing for a review (No): Google calls incentives "fake & misleading content"

  • Asking only happy customers and steering unhappy ones elsewhere (No): Google prohibits discouraging negative reviews or selectively soliciting positive ones

  • Having employees or family post reviews (No): Reviews must reflect a real customer experience

  • Buying reviews (No): Fastest way to get reviews removed or your profile flagged

Google's own help page is blunt about incentives: offering "free or discounted goods or services, in exchange for customers to post reviews, change reviews, or remove negative reviews is considered fake & misleading content and is strictly prohibited." A raffle or "$25 off your next service" for a review falls on the wrong side of that line.

Make it a habit, not a campaign

Most contractors try a review push, get a burst, and then stop. A steady trickle looks better to customers reading your profile than a pile from two years ago and nothing since. Fresh reviews also give people recent proof that you still show up and do good work.

A simple weekly routine:

  1. Every job: in-person ask at the walkthrough, link texted the same day.

  2. Two or three days later: one reminder to anyone who hasn't left one.

  3. Once a week: the office reviews who got asked and who didn't, and replies to every new review.

  4. Once a month: check your Google Business Profile. Hours, services, photos, service area. Reviews work better when the rest of the profile is complete too. Our post on Google Business Profile features HVAC companies should be using applies to most contractors.

If you can track one thing, track ask rate: jobs completed versus review requests sent. When reviews dry up, it's almost always because the asks stopped.

Where reviews fit in the bigger picture

Reviews feed everything else. They help you show up in local search, they make your website more convincing, and they make you less dependent on paid lead sites. If you're weighing that last one, read whether Angi and HomeAdvisor leads are worth it.

FAQ

How do I get more Google reviews for my contracting business?

Ask every customer in person when the job is finished, text them your direct Google review link the same day, and send one reminder a few days later. Put the ask on your crew's closeout checklist so it happens on every job, not just when the owner remembers.

Where do I find my Google review link?

You can create a direct review link and a QR code from your Google Business Profile. Save the link as a text shortcut on every crew phone so anyone can send it in a few seconds.

Can I offer a discount for a Google review?

No. Google's policy treats discounts, free services or other incentives in exchange for reviews as fake and misleading content, and it's prohibited. You can ask every customer for an honest review. You just can't pay for it in any form.

When is the best time to ask a customer for a review?

At the final walkthrough, while the customer is looking at the finished work. Send the link within the hour. Goodwill fades quickly once the crew leaves and life gets busy again.

Should I respond to every Google review?

Yes. A short, specific reply to good reviews shows a real person runs the company. For bad reviews, stay calm, skip the public argument, and offer to talk directly. Future customers read those replies as closely as the reviews.

You have questions. We have answers.

What's included in the Business Bundle?

One $299/mo subscription that unlocks every app on the platform — MoSocial, MoMail, MoBlogs, and MoReviews — under a single bill. Since MoSocial and MoBlogs alone would be $298/mo, the bundle effectively gets you everything for the price of two apps.

How does the 7-day free trial work?

Every plan starts with 7 days free — you get full access, FloGen starts generating content right away, and you're only billed if you stay past day 7. Cancel anytime during the trial and you pay nothing.

Which plan is right for my business?

If you only need one channel fixed (say, email), start with that app. If you want your whole marketing presence handled — which is how most customers in real estate, trades, and franchises use MoFlo — the bundle is the obvious pick at basically two apps' price. Still unsure? Book a demo and we'll map it to your business.

Can I buy just one app instead of the bundle?

Yes — it's either the bundle or individual apps, whichever fits. MoSocial is $149/mo, MoMail $79/mo, MoBlogs $149/mo, and MoReviews $99/mo, and you can start with one app and upgrade to the bundle later without losing any of your content or settings.

Are there contracts, setup fees, or hidden costs?

No contracts and no setup fees — plans are month-to-month and you can cancel anytime from your account settings. The price you see on the pricing page is the whole price; integrations, FloGen generation, and Brand Power scoring are all included.

Can I switch or cancel my plan later?

Yes. Upgrades apply immediately, downgrades and cancellations at the end of your billing cycle, and your content, knowledge, and connected accounts are preserved if you come back.
